How To Download Steam Mods Without Steam
Posted on
Download the mod, find the file, change the extension, and install it normally. After that, unsubscribe from the mod. That being said, there are more detailed instructions somewhere on the forum; I would've posted them here but I simply don't remember them now and outside of information about the location of the file ('somewhere') and the desired extension (either '.rar' or '.zip'), it's.
- To install from steam, you need to have the game in your library as the mod installs basically 'update' the game with your subscribed content. I'm not sure if there are other mod places out there, but I think you need to own the content in steam to have steam even download the mods.
- I'd like to download the mods files onto my desktop without using Steam Workshop. Any sites that are hosting the mods for download? And just need to get a copy of the files to my PC without using steam. Dont want to install the game, just want to grab the mod files. Last edited by Amon Amarth; Dec 12, 2016 @ 4:23am #7.

Aeroithia: Hello, complete noob to adding mods but, where would the GOG version's substitute workshop folder be?
I've looked in the my documents folder on my desktop here and can't locate ^^'
LizardBz2: It probably depends on which version of windows you are running. I've looked in the my documents folder on my desktop here and can't locate ^^'
I'm using Win 7 and my gogWorkshop folder is in libraries/documents/My Games/Battlezone Combat Commander Thank for the reply. Using Windows 10 myself, don't know if that helps.
How To Download Steam App
Have the GoG Backup folder and GoG.com downloads folders in my Docs folder, but I don't Battlezone Combat commander listed in either.Edit: I missed the 'My Games' portion of the file path, I've found it now ^^' Cheers ^^
Edit 2: If one were to purchase the game on steam just to unlock the workshop access, can the mods then be pulled over to the GoG version without issue?

They can, yes - it's the download packages that are encrypted, not the mods themselves.Aeroithia

Ded10c: They can, yes - it's the download packages that are encrypted, not the mods themselves. I see. So once down in a person's steam workshop folder, they'll be unencrypted? That being the case, would that be a unauthorised redistribution risk, for the mod makers, if someone were to take that round about route to give these mods out?
I've no plan to though I would like to be able to roll my old favourite MPI maps again, but I'm sure someone would probably have thought of it.

Personally I think we need to look at getting mods hosted outside of steam workshop, having mods exclusive to steam is going to split the community and ultimately it'll end up being bad for the game.
Valve really are a bunch of dicks trying to gate off user made content like that, it's greed pure and simple.
When Fleshstorm is finally ported over to BZCC I'm going to take steps to keep it out of Steam workshop for this reason alone.

BZScrap stands ready to accept any and all mod content - and if all goes to plan it should be getting a facelift in the near future.
I'm not convinced this is Valve's doing, since it's not a global change and BZR (for which an identical guide exists) remains totally unaffected.
Personally I'd advise against keeping FleshStorm *out* of the Steam Workshop specifically, since that would make it significantly more difficult for Steam Workshop users to play it (and they make up the majority of BZCC's audience).

Okay, good news! The issues with this guide were the result of the game's release; the Steam Workshop works differently (and clunkily) for pre-release titles, so while the guide worked just before release the issue only became apparent afterwards. Rebellion have adjusted the necessary settings (thanks guys!) and this guide now works correctly.

I'm sorry, I've just noticed the links to the guides are the wrong way around. I've updated the original post to point to the correct guide (the contents are mostly the same).

I wanted to make sure everyone knew that I have a mod manager for GOG in beta. It allows for syncing mods from Steam to GOG or from its internal Steam Workshop Downloader. If I can manage to catch Ded10c I'll get him to add it to the guides on Steam. I can't post links on GOG forums yet but you can get it or see its source code on my GitHub account 'Nielk1'. It's called 'Battlezone-Redux-Mod-Manager'.

Gydion: https://github.com/Nielk1/Battlezone-Redux-Mod-ManagerThe README seems a bit sparse. Yea no kidding about the README. There's a paragraph on the release item that gives a basic explination but it's not really instructions. I will improve the readme with actual instructions when I have the next version ready.

AlienMind: Well.. for some games like Hat In Time, you're fucked
'The game that this item belongs too does not allow downloading of its items' on https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1370035983
Guess GOG users are not allowed to use mods for that game.
'I think it's not actually possible to use a downloader for newer steam workshop stuff, because it uses the same download depot system for mods as for games. It all goes through the steam client now.
In the past the steam workshop used to use a different system where the game itself would download mods using an API, which I think is what that steam workshop downloader is trying to use. '

Ah ok.. so... vendor lock in completed. Congratulations you guys.
This is nothing to do with Steam Downloader and the API, and everything to do with the publisher of the game not enabling those who don't own the game on Steam to download workshop mods. The API Steam downloader (and similar web pages and tools) uses is a web-based API - it never had anything to do with the game itself.
If you want a mod that's currently 'locked' for you because you don't have it on Steam, your options are:
1) Contact the publisher of the game and get them to unlock it (this sometimes works - Klei unlocked Invisible Inc workshop mods for example).
2) See if the mod is available elsewhere, such as Moddb or NexusMods - if not, contact the developer of the mod and get them to get their shit together.
How To Download Steam Mods For Non-steam
3) Buy the game on Steam.
I suspect that Steam 'locks' the workshop by default, which is why newer games tend to often not be accessible via the downloader - meaning it's up to the game's publisher to explicitly set the workshop to be available.

If I would have known this earlier, I would never had bought this game over GOG but over Steam.
Also, the connecting to other people is a big problem.
Do someone know if one can get a refund for a transfer to Steam from the Publisher?
But I learnt my lesson, I will only buy singleplayer games or games with internal multiplayer management on GOG, but never ever games that:
- need a infrastructure for mods
- have their multiplayer outsourced to the distribution platform

Hello everyone.
Considering that this thread is still relatively active.. and a top result on google as well..
The website www.steamworkshopdownloader.io has now officially been updated to support many more games.
Any game that doesn't explicitly disable 'anonymous game server downloads' should be working now.
If your game still doesn't work, see if you can get the game developer to enable this setting.
Enjoy!
-
The technicalities:
We are no longer just relying on the outdated 'Steam Web API' (also known as the ISteamRemoteStorage interface) to retrieve files. Most download tools rely on this.
Using a large pool of steam clients, we were able to automate file retrieval of games that use the newer 'User Generated Content API' (also known as the ISteamUGC interface). So many more modern games are supported by our website.
(so please be aware of any website that claims 'not to be allowed to download files'- it may actually just be lacking support for the newer API)
